“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewed as snakes and as innocent as doves.” – Jesus, Matthew 10:16
These are few words Jesus said when He sent out the twelve disciples to start their ministry. These verses are still appropriate unto this time for us believers.
We are send out like sheep among the wolves. We may face persecutions from the world, especially the missionaries. But do not worry, as the Spirit of God is with us and will speak through us (Matthew 10:20). Yes, we may face persecutions but the reward God will give us is the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:10). Persecutions are temporary suffering but the Kingdom of Heaven is an everlasting joy we will have with God.
As we are like sheep among the wolves, Jesus gives us advice on how to survive, “be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves”. We are advice to be shrewd with innocence. We are to act shrewdly, but is not to be like cunning shrewdness, rather a godly, innocent shrewdness. We should be wise to overcome or flee from the persecutions of the world, but we should take into account not to hurt somebody and still honoring God in being shrewd.
