Few days to go and it's 2023! Thank, God, as we started to live back the way we live prior to pandemic - although with still much care as Covid is still around. And as we usher 2023, I believe there are more things we are planning to do that we weren't able to accomplish during the pandemic years.
As we draw near to the closure of 2022 and the coming of the new year, 2023, may this guide helps you prepare for a better, stronger 2023!
1. Review your 2022.
Look back at the things that happened in 2022. What are the things that you are grateful for? What are the new things that you've learnt? What are your successes? What are your failures?
2. Know your current state of life.
Know where you are right now. Here are the 10 areas of life that you can consider based on John 10:10 Life Wheel:
God & Purpose
Health & Fitness
Love & Romance
Home & Family
Knowledge & Wisdom
Money & Finance
Friends & Social
Business & Career
Play & Relaxation
Community & Contribution
I personally use the John 10:10 Life Wheel to reflect on my current state of life. You can download the Life Wheel here.
3. Identify your values.
Do you know why there are goals that are difficult to achieve? They might not be aligned to your values or your values do not aligned with it.
Have an insight on how to discover your core values here.
4. Know how your strengths align with your values.
If you have your CliftonStrengths results, you can dig deeper into your values and know how they correlate with your CliftonStrengths results. Know more about it here.
5. Setup your goals.
Based on your John 10:10 Life Wheel outcome, choose one that you would like to focus first. If you can work on multiple items at once, it should be fine as well.
What goal do you like to achieve in 2023 for this area of life? Make your goal SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound).
Specific - Make your goal specific and narrow for more effective planning.
Measurable - setup measures of progress in achieving your goal. This is for you to know if you are making progress or not.
Attainable - making sure that you can reasonable accomplish the goal within a given timeframe.
Realistic - is this aligned to your values and long term objectives?
Time-Bound - Setup date on when you targeted to accomplish your goal.
Ask God for wisdom as you plan your 2023 goals and don't forget to write down your goals.
6. Create your mini-goals (checkpoints).
It is highly encouraged to setup your mini-goals (or checkpoint) that can track your progress until you achieve your main goal.
For example, if your main goal is to lose 20 kilograms this year, you can set mini-goals like lose 5 kilograms per month, then maintain the weight for certain months.
Achieving your mini-goals can boost your motivation to achieve your main goal!
But don't get demotivated in case you did not meet it. See the values in action that might prevent you to achieve your goals, reflect and re-assess.
7. Define your action steps.
What are the steps you are going to take toward achieving your goal? Start small and be realistic on what you are able to do in certain timeframe.
8. Find an accountability partner/group.
It is really good to have like-minded individuals journeying with you towards your goals!
Find either a fitness buddy/club if you have fitness goals, a book club if you would like to achieve your goals in reading more books, a life group if you would like to grow further spiritually and so on.
It's more fun journeying with others!
9. Celebrate wins - small and big!
Don't forget to celebrate when you achieve something - big or small.
10. Acknowledge God.
God enables us to do things. Acknowledge God in every step and every journey you are taking. He gives us strengths to go further and grace to sustain us even in our darkest moments.
Not all the time we are successful in achieving our main goal, or even our mini-goals and action steps. But take these as new discoveries and learnings that you can use to plan or recalibrate your goals. Continue to explore and try out things. You can use these planning tips as often as you want.
